Ordering Guide
Ordering lumber and wood products involves several important considerations. Below are primary questions that help define every project. Answering these beforehand will streamline the purchasing process significantly. If you are uncertain about any details, please call us so we can help clarify your requirements.
Interior or Exterior Use?
For indoor products, consider the final appearance after staining or painting, and how the wood grain complements your space. Natural light from windows varies throughout the day and can alter the perceived color of flooring or beams.
Outdoor products share these aesthetic needs but also require durability against weather, pests, and local wildlife. These materials must be robust to ensure longevity. We offer various pre-treated options specifically designed to provide superior protection against the natural elements.
Selecting Wood Species
Identifying your preferred material is a vital first step. Choosing a specific species will help guide your subsequent project decisions.
Hardwoods are typically preferred for high-traffic flooring and siding, while softwoods are excellent for beams, fencing, and custom millwork. Our inventory also includes unique exotic woods. Whether you desire elegant mahogany for furniture or redwood trim to coordinate with your home exterior, we can assist you in sourcing the perfect wood.
Material Grade and Quality Choice
Grade indicates the visual quality of the lumber, specifically regarding the presence of knots and grain consistency. Every species follows a distinct grading scale. It is helpful to decide if you prefer a clear, uniform look or a more rustic character. The appropriate grade usually depends on the specific goals of your project. If you need assistance selecting a grade, our team is available to consult.
Desired Dimensions and Lengths
For standard dimensions, we can quickly facilitate an order for your pickup. If your project demands unique sizes or specialized cuts, our full-service milling and custom tooling shop can manufacture products to your exact specifications. Simply provide your required measurements, and our experts will present the best available options for your custom build.
Net vs Nominal
Standard lumber sizes like 2" x 4" are actually 1-1/2" x 3-1/2" when measured. This is known as nominal sizing, where the dimension is a name rather than a physical measurement. If your design requires precise physical dimensions, you must request Net sizing. Specifying Net ensures that a 2" x 4" order will be delivered with a physical measurement of exactly two inches by four inches.
Quantity and Unit of Measure
Review your site measurements and blueprints carefully. The quantity required often influences pricing and lead times. Please specify your needs in linear feet for standard or reclaimed lumber, total sheets for plywood and MDF, or individual pieces for specialty items such as live-edge slabs and other unique timber products.
Specific Project Type
Sharing your project goals allows us to provide better planning support. Our expertise might lead to suggestions that improve your result. For example, while poplar is excellent for painted trim, we might recommend an alternative species for high-moisture areas like bathrooms to ensure better performance over time.
